Why Damascus:

A good place for the Study Classical Arabic

The  best way ever known to discover a country or a culture, know their traditions, understand their values, thinking, and learn their language is to live in it and mix with the people. Traveling for a few days or weeks is not enough to say ”I know this country”.

"Dimashq" is one of the best cities to study Arabic, offering a complete linguistic immersion. Unlike other countries (of the Middle East as Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Gulf countries or North Africa, where English and French are widely spread), here, few people speak English or French, foreign languages are not widely spoken.

Here the students will therefore be obliged to express themselves in Arabic, make efforts to practice the language at all times and in all situations of everyday life to communicate with locals. They will listen, hear, see, read in the streets, talk to people, buy, move, eat, drink, sleep... in one word, they will LIVE in Arabic 24 hours a day (and even dream in Arabic, Insha Allah!!).

Many people and students in western countries are looking for Arabic and/or Islamic studies, to improve their level of Arabic, deepen their Islamic knowledge, but they don’t know where to go, where to begin with.

Certainly, they think immediately about Tunis, Cairo, Jordan for the Arabic language or Al Azhar in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen or Mauritania for Islamic studies, Morocco or Sudan to memorize Coran. In each, there are advantages and inconvenients. But few know about Syria, and specially Damascus.

Dimashq, is more traditional and authentic. We don’t find (yet!) big malls, Coca or Pepsi monopole, Mac Donalds, Burger King, the western cultural and commercial invasion …. Syria has less mass-tourism, which means more traditional and natural atmosphere, is less westernized which means more originality and more confidence in Arab identity, is more educated which means easier and better access to local community for language practice and cultural immersion. For Muslims, they immerse themselves in an appropriate atmosphere: there are mosques everywhere and the Adhan can be heard five times a day from every mosques. It is a conservative society. People are free to practice their religion.

You can come alone, with other students and friends willing to improve their Arabic and knowledge, or with your family, wife and children.

In another hand, Syrian people speak an Arabic (colloquial Arabic, Al A’mmia, Al darija) which is very close to classical and standard Arabic (Al Fus-ha), easy to understand, widely spoken. This gives the great possibility to use classical Arabic with Syrians, who understand it perfectly. The people of Damascus are well-educated and are friendly and opened to foreigners, they are always willing to help foreigners to practice it. Syrians really appreciate and are very happy when you speak with them in Arabic. Like this, you can fully participate to the daily life of the city (buy, negotiate, having friends, meeting people for interviews, jobs).

Syrian Arabic is the most useful and accessible of all the Arabic dialects: used in all types of oral communication by Syrians at all levels. Almost identical to dialects in Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan. Widely understood all over the Arab world. Reasonably close to formal Arabic due to historical and geographical reasons.

In another hand, life in Damascus is cheap and affordable, compared to Lebanon, Egypt or Jordan. For example, a 4 person diner in a good Syrian restaurant will cost around 20-25 Euros (all). For the rent of a furnished 3 rooms, you have to count around 230-250 Euros per month.
